FAQ

1. Who is eligible for the program?
Anyone seeking eligibility must:

  • Be a Colorado resident.
  • Have medical documentation of a Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI).
  • Have ongoing impairment of cognitive or physical function as a result of a TBI.
  • You must complete the application and appropriate documentation.

2. How do I apply?
Applications are available at www.biacolorado.org or call the Brain Injury Association of Colorado (BIAC) at 303-355-9969.

3. When do I start receiving services?
At times there is a high demand for services, so there may be a wait. We will be in phone contact with you until you start.

4. Is there a waitlist?
For adults age 21 and over, yes there is a waitlist. Due to the high demand of the program, we currently have a one year waiting list for adults. If you are currently on the waitlist and want to check your status, please contact Christen Mason at 303-636-5863. For children and young adults, age 21 and younger, currently there is not a waitlist for services.

5. How long will I have services?
Your services will last one full year.

6. How can I find out who my Care Coordinator is?
Please contact Christen Mason at 303-636-5863.

7. What does a Care Coordinator do?
Among many other things, your Care Coordinator will:

  • Conduct an initial assessment
  • Maintain monthly phone contact
  • Be your connection to services

8. What type of services can I access with the $2,000.00?
The following list includes examples of the kind of services that can be paid for by the TBI Trust Fund. Please discuss your own need for services with your Care Coordinator. If you need a service that is not on this list, or if you are not sure whether the service you need is on this list, talk it over with your Care Coordinator.

  • activities of daily living
  • acupuncture
  • adaptive devices
  • alternative communication devices
  • assistive devices and technology
  • biofeedback
  • camp programs
  • chiropractic treatment
  • cognitive therapy
  • community residential services
  • companion services
  • co-payments for TBI services covered by insurance
  • driver evaluation and training
  • durable medical equipment
  • educational materials
  • employment services
  • exercise equipment and exercise programs at a health club facility
  • hearing disorder treatment
  • home and environmental modifications
  • home care
  • independent living skills training and development
  • massage
  • neuromedical treatment
  • nutrition and diet consultation
  • occupational therapy
  • organizational supports
  • patient, family and support system education
  • personal care
  • physical therapy
  • psychological and mental health services
  • respite care
  • socialization skills training
  • speech and language therapy
  • structured day program services
  • substance abuse treatment
  • supported living programs
  • therapeutic recreation
  • transitional living services
  • transportation to and from services included in the care coordination plan
  • tutoring
  • vehicle modifications
  • visual impairment treatment

In order to qualify for payment by the TBI Trust Fund, all of the following criteria must be met:
  • the need for the service must be related to the traumatic brain injury; AND
  • the service must be included in your approved Care Coordination Plan before you receive the service; AND
  • the Care Coordination Agency must give the service provider a written authorization before you receive the service.

9. What items can I not get?
We are not able to pay for items not related to the traumatic brain injury. Examples of services that are NOT covered include: institutionalization, hospitalization, medications, rent, utilities, furniture, groceries, vehicles, appliances, clothing and cash.

10. How do I find out information on your providers?
Presently, you can contact Jennifer Anderson at 303-636-5829 or 866-245-6600 to see if a provider is enrolled in the TBI program.

11. What happens at the end of my year?
Your Care Coordinator will develop a transition plan with you that will include all the contact information of those you have been working with. We will also connect you to community resources for future supports.
